Toddler Sized Ladybug Slippers

Toddler Sized
Lady Bug Slippers

These are super easy and fast to work up.  The size this pattern makes is for a 5” slipper, fitting a child approx 18 - 24 months.  Sizing is pretty flexible, especially going up - just add a row or two of the red to make it longer.  To go down a size or two decrease the red until it’s the size you want.  To make them wider or narrower you’ll have to play with the beginning ring, or just go down a hook size.  I’m lazy when it comes to math, so if it’s possible to just change hook sizes and get the results, that’s what I’ll do.

Materials

H hook (I do crochet tightly, so you may want to use a G if it’s coming out too large)

Red Yarn - Less than 100 yards
Black Yarn - Less than 50 yards

yarn needle for weaving in ends

Stitches you’ll need to know
ch - chain
ss - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc  - double crochet
sliding/adjustable ring
---------------

With Black make a sliding/adjustable ring
Round 1
in the ring
ch 2, hdc 7
join with ss to top of beginning ch2, pull center of ring tight.

Round 2
ch2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout)
hdc in same stitch
2 hdc in next 3 stitches
dc in next 4 stitches  (This is the top of the head)
join with ss to first hdc

Round 3
ch 2 hdc same stitch
hdc next stitch
* 2 hdc in next stitch, 1 hdc in following stitch
repeat from * around
join with ss to beginning ch 2

Round 4
ch 2
hdc around, join with ss to beginning ch 2

Round 5
ch1, sc in same stitch
sc around
join with ss to first sc

fasten off, keeping track of where this round ended

Round 6
Count back 6 stitches from the final black stitch and join red.  This is the top of the head and just be marginally taller because of the dc made in round 2
ch 1, sc in same stitch
sc around
join with ss to first sc

Rounds 7 & 8
ch 1, sc in same stitch
sc around
join with ss to first sc

Starting with 9 the rounds become rows and you work back and forth, turning.

Row 9
ch 1, sc in same stitch
sc around
DO NOT JOIN WHEN YOU REACH THE FIRST SC

Row 10 -
ch 1, sc in same stitch
sc across

Repeat row 10 until entire slipper measures 5 inches (or desired length)

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Sew the back now or wait.  I like to wait because it makes sewing on the spots much much easier.  Of course sewing first makes positioning them easier because then you can visualize where the bottom of the slipper is.

Spots  (make 6 or as many as you think look best)
With black make a sliding/adjustable ring
in ring, ch 2 hdc 7
join with ss to top of beginning ch 2
fasten off leaving long tail for sewing.

Sew spots to sides.

Antennae (make 2)

With black ch 6
3 sc in 2nd chain from hook
ss to end
fasten off leaving tail for sewing.

I like to position them 2 stitches away from the center point.  Find the spot you want them, and sew on.

Weave in ends.

Since kitchen floors are slippery when socked, especially for toddlers, I like to put dimensional paint or even dots made from hot glue on the bottom for a bit of traction.  The glue works well and is easy - just have to make sure you don’t let it soak through and gum up the inside.  If you’ve ever gotten hot glue on your clothes you know it can be darn impossible to get out.  Dimensional paint is easy too, but sometimes can be pulled off.

  2. So adorable! How would I go about making them for a bigger foot?

  3. To make them larger - just increase the size on the black rounds until it's the width that you want - the same as increasing rounds for a hat. Then increase the red until it's the length you need by adding extra rows.

  5. Thanks for the pattern. I'm going to use it to make solid-colored slippers for now because I don't have any red yarn left. I'm from Michigan (for the contest).
